"Come to me, all you who
are weary and burdened,
and I will give you rest".

Paul Danielson

I have tried to live my life in a way that honors God.  I fall short, believe me.  One of my favorite verses in the Bible is Philippians 1:21, "For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain."  That verse taken from the New American Standard version amplifies how we should conduct our lives.  A life lived for Christ can only bring positive results.  I received a sweet birthday letter from my eighteen year old son this past year. I want to share it with you because it deeply touched my heart.  It reads as follows:
It's kinda hard to write cards like this when there's so much that you can say about someone.  So, I'm gonna just cover the most important stuff. First of all, there isn’t another person on this earth that I would want to hold as an example for how a man should raise a family. Not every son can say that about their dads with total and complete confidence that it’s the truth. But I can have a lot of pride in knowing that I’m one of the ones that can. I not only love you as a dad, but I respect you as a man. Especially considering the fact that you’ve given us something you didn’t receive from your father. I want you to know how profound it is that you’ve been a consistently positive role model for me, Gabe and so many other people, despite what you went through as a kid. You turned something that crushes lives into something that builds them. I see the joy you have in helping other people every day and it’s something that changes the people around you for the better. That’s just scratching the surface!
I’m proud to call you my dad!

This letter made me cry.  First because I feel so inadequate and second, because I have a long way to go, but I know this for certain: if I keep Philippians 1:21 ever before me I will grow closer to God and become more like Him in all that I do. I want my sons to love and respect me.  More than that I want them to love and respect Jesus Christ.  Is there any greater calling in life?  The life we live for Christ now will express itself in the lives our children lead tomorrow.
